Monotype was born from the typesetting machine developed by Tolbert Lanston at the end of the 1880s. The Monotype Corporation, founded in the United Kingdom in 1897, enjoyed exceptional influence under the leadership of Stanley Morison. It later acquired many foundries, including Linotype, FontShop, Hoefler&Co and Colophon.
