The foundry was founded in 1989 in New York by Jonathan Hoefler, under the name Hoefler Type Foundry. It became Hoefler & Frere-Jones in 1999, with the arrival of Tobias Frere-Jones, then Hoefler&Co after they parted ways in 2014. It was acquired by Monotype in 2021.
