Born in 1970 in New York, Jonathan Hoefler founded his own foundry, the Hoefler Type Foundry, in 1989. He partnered with Tobias Frere-Jones from 1999 to 2014, before continuing under the name Hoefler&Co, acquired by Monotype in 2021.
Vision
Hoefler sees typography as a work of historical research and systems, with very complete families designed to meet every need of a brand or a publication.
Works
His work includes Hoefler Text, shipped with Apple computers, HTF Didot for Harper's Bazaar, Knockout and Mercury, as well as Archer, created with Tobias Frere-Jones.
Legacy
His foundry played a major role in professionalizing brand typography in the United States, and his typefaces set a large number of magazines, identities and institutions.
